Elayne Forgie Opens the First Location of the The Alzheimer’s Care Resource Center: a gathering place for caregivers
“At the Alzheimer’s Care Resource Center, you no longer feel alone:
because you will no longer be alone”
(West Palm Beach, FL, January 9, 2012) Every day, somewhere in Palm Beach County, an Alzheimer’s caregiver wakes-up and is not sure how they are going to make it through the day.
The stress that comes with being a caregiver for an Alzheimer’s, dementia or memory impaired person is simply overwhelming. Caregivers face a host of daily challenges with few, if any, resources available just for them.
Today, the Alzheimer’s Care Resource Center: A gathering place for caregivers, opened in West Palm Beach. It is the first organization of its kind in Palm Beach County where a caregiver can go, that is solely dedicated to meeting their needs.
“Palm Beach County has outstanding memory disorder centers, neurologists, home health care providers, adult day care centers and community service organizations that do a wonderful job in meeting the needs of the Alzheimer’s patient” said Elayne Forgie President and CEO. “Unfortunately, until now, we have not been very successful in meeting the unique needs of the Alzheimer’s/dementia caregiver”.
The Alzheimer’s Care Resource Center was specifically created to nurture caregivers and provide them with a safe environment where they can feel free to cry, laugh, share and, most of all, receive all of the help and caregiver support that they need to keep them healthy, improve their quality of life, and keep them out of the hospital.
“Being a full time caregiver can be a very lonely and stressful experience. By the time a caregiver leaves the Alzheimer’s Care Resource Center: A gathering place for caregivers they will no longer feel alone, because they will no longer be alone. We offer a wide variety of programs and services to help them manage all of the demands of caregiving in a warm, relaxed and nurturing environment”.
For more information regarding the Alzheimer’s Care Resource Center, please visit www.AlzheimersCareResourceCenter.com or call (561) 588-4545.
The mission of the Alzheimer’s Care Resource Center is to provide a supportive gathering place for caregivers of people diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease, dementia or other cognitive impairments.

ElderCare at Home Joins Nationwide Campaign to Encourage Discussion and Planning with Older Adults during the Holidays
Cost Savings and Better Health Outcomes Cited as Reasons for Older Patients and their Caregivers to Actively Plan for Hospital Stays
West Palm Beach, Florida – Returning home from a hospital stay can result in unexpected challenges for many seniors and as a result, millions of older Americans are spending billions of dollars on health care costs every year that could be avoided through simple planning and preparation prior to being admitted to the hospital. Nearly one in five Medicare patients discharged from the hospital is readmitted within 30 days due to an injury resulting from medical management – not the underlying disease – costing over $26 billion every year. Some studies have found that between 40 percent and 50 percent of readmissions are linked to social problems and lack of community resources.
This holiday season, Eldercare Locator, a public service of the U.S. Administration on Aging that is administered by the National Association of Area Agencies on Aging (n4a), launched its 9th Annual Home for the Holidays campaign encouraging older adults, caregivers and their families to use their time together this holiday season to discuss potential hospital visits and start planning ahead for a smooth transition from the hospital to the home. ElderCare at Home is supporting the campaign by raising awareness for more effective care transitions in the Palm Beach County area
“This holiday season is an ideal time for families to get together and plan ahead,” said Elayne Forgie, President at ElderCare at Home. “We strongly encourage Palm Beach County families to take some time to address these issues so that heading into the New Year, when medical issues arise, a plan is in place.”
Eldercare Locator and the United Hospital Fund’s Next Step in Care (www.nextstepincare.org) released a consumer guide that can be used by Palm Beach County families and caregivers to lead the discussion this holiday season. The guide, which provides planning tips for pre-hospital check-in as well as post-checkout from the hospital, is available here. Some of the questions the Eldercare Locator encourages the public to address prior to being admitted to a hospital include: What do you need to bring? If you are not going to be well enough to care for yourself when you are released, where will you go? Will you need help getting around? Will you need equipment and supplies? Will you be able to take the appropriate medications without help those first days out of the hospital? Who will assist you? How long will you need assistance?
“As we age, the likelihood of a hospital stay increases and it is critical to plan before that time arrives,” said Kathy Greenlee, Assistant Secretary for Aging, U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. “We encourage families and caregivers to take advantage of their time with older relatives this holiday season to talk about the brochure’s important cost-saving and potentially life-saving tips.”
ElderCare at Home offers both pre and post hospital evaluations, guidance, support and information. You can reach us at 800-209-4342.

ElderCare at Home Invites Community Members to Check Up on Their Memory
West Palm Beach, Florida— ElderCare at Home is encouraging members of the community to be proactive about memory health by taking advantage of free, confidential memory screenings and information about successful aging on November 15.
The event is part of National Memory Screening Day (NMSD), an annual initiative that the Alzheimer’s Foundation of America (AFA) holds each November during National Alzheimer’s Disease Awareness Month. More than 2,000 sites across the country will be participating.
ElderCare at Home will provide the memory screenings at 2328 10th Ave N #601, Lake Worth, Florida 33461 from 10:00 a.m until 4:00 p.m. For more information, call 800-209-4342
Qualified healthcare professionals administer the screenings, which consist of a series of questions and tasks, and take five to ten minutes. Screening results are not a diagnosis, and individuals with below-normal scores or who have concerns are encouraged to pursue a full medical exam.
Some memory problems can be readily treated, such as those caused by vitamin deficiencies or thyroid problems. Other memory problems might result from causes that are not currently reversible, such as Alzheimer’s disease. In general, the earlier the diagnosis, the easier it is to treat one of these conditions.
Eric J. Hall, AFA’s president and CEO, said the continuing growth of National Memory Screening Day reinforces the need for this service. More than 30 leading professional organizations are supporting the event this year.
“Community memory screenings are a vital resource to begin a dialogue with a healthcare professional and to learn more about brain health. They prompt critical next steps,” he said.
AFA urges anyone concerned about memory changes, at risk of Alzheimer’s disease due to family history or who wants to check their memory now and for future comparison to get screened. Warning signs of dementia include forgetting people’s names and events, asking repetitive questions, loss of verbal or written skills, confusion over daily routines, and erratic mood swings.
Currently, as many as 5.1 million Americans have Alzheimer’s disease, and the incidence is rising in line with the swell of aging baby boomers. The prevalence of Alzheimer’s disease doubles every five years beyond age 65.
Event sponsors are: Forest Laboratories and Senior Helpers as silver sponsors; and Accera Inc., Eli Lilly and Company, and Novartis, as remembrance sponsors.
For more information about National Memory Screening Day, visit www.nationalmemoryscreening.org or call 866-AFA-8484.
The Alzheimer’s Foundation of America, based in New York, is a national nonprofit organization that unites more than 1,600 member organizations nationwide with the goal of providing optimal care and services to individuals confronting dementia, and to their caregivers and families. Its services include counseling and referrals by licensed social workers via a toll-free hot line, e-mail, Skype and live chat; educational materials; a free quarterly magazine for caregivers; and professional training. The Alzheimer’s Foundation of America (AFA) is calling upon experienced professionals in the field of dementia care to conduct the Excellence in Care Dementia Program of Distinction in their local communities.
According to Elayne Forgie, “The ElderCare Resource Center has always been a strong advocate for the highest level of standards and guidelines for Assisted Living facilities, Nursing Homes, Adult Day Care Centers and home care agencies that provide care to Alzheimer’s patients or those suffering from other forms of memory impairment.
